Introduction: The Canterbury Matchplay on September 14th featured 12 competitive players, including three of last week's four semi-finalists: Mr Han, myself (John Cordue), and Yi Sien Lin. The stage was set for intense competition ahead of the NZ nationals, where only the finalists would secure a share of the coveted prize money.
Semi-Final Battles: In the semi-finals, the heat was on as Mr Han, Yi Sien and I, along with Stuart Armstrong, vied for the top two spots. Stuart's solid table tennis skills had propelled him ahead of the highly-rated Craig Dye during the group phase. With prize money exclusively reserved for the finalists, the semi-finals were always fiercely contested.
Semi-final results:
Jong Eub Han vs. Stuart Armstrong: 3 - 0
John Cordue vs. Yi Sien Lin: 3 - 0
The Ultimate Showdown: The final brought together two of Canterbury's top-rated players once again, with Mr Han holding the coveted top spot in the NZ ratings (ranked 1), while I held a strong position at fifth place (ranked 5). Our history was defined by numerous encounters in Canterbury Open finals, Otago Open finals, and multiple Canterbury interclub matches, all of which I had lost. In fact, I hadn't bested him in an official match since the Canterbury Open in 2011. You can watch a video of that match here.
Strategic Shifts: For this decisive match, I made two significant strategic adjustments:
Increased Use of Backhand Loop: I employed my backhand loop more frequently, both in receiving serves and as my initial attack after serving.
Targeting Han's Weakness: I strategically directed the majority of my attacks away from Han's formidable backhand block. While my usual preference was to initiate with forehand loops, I recognized that against Han's exceptional blocking, a weaker backhand opening followed by a faster shot allowed me to seize control of the rally and enhance the quality of my fifth shot.
The Triumph: To my surprise, I executed this strategy even better than anticipated, securing victory in a shortened match with a score of 2 games to zero.
Final result:
John Cordue vs. Jong Eub Han: 2 - 0
Conclusion: This victory marked the end of a long finals drought against the formidable Mr. Han, proving that strategic adaptations can be the key to overcoming a formidable opponent.
